Eight Belles had a lot of heart that didn’t go unnoticed by over 157,000 fans including Hillary Clinton and daughter Chelsea. She was the first filly to run the derby in 9 years and she gave it her all.
R.I.P. Eight Belles
Eight Belles finished second in the race just 4 ¾ lengths behind Big Brown, the winner. Seconds later, the filly collapsed with two broken front ankles.
Eight Belles couldn’t stand to make it to the waiting ambulance so the decision had to be made to euthanize her on the spot.
I think this is one of the saddest stories I have ever read and you can read it here. R.I.P. Eight Belles, you may have come in second, but you were the real winner in heart.
